Welcome to Chicago!
Chicago, also known as the “Windy City”, is the largest city in Illinois and with almost 3 million people, the third most-populous city in the United States. When combined with its suburbs and nine surrounding counties in Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana, the greater metropolitan area, also know as Chicagoland, has a population of over 9.5 million.
Since its foundation in 1833 as a frontier town, Chicago has grown into an influential world city. Today, Chicago is the financial, economic, and cultural capital of the Midwest, and is recognized as a major transportation, business, and architectural center. The city’s skyscrapers and architecture, local cuisine, political traditions, and athletic teams are some of its most recognized aspects.
Chicago has a vital and diverse business community as well as a rich cultural and artistic life that makes it the perfect location for a world-class university like UIC. Many Fortune 500 companies and thousands of small and mid-sized firms are headquartered in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. The Willis Tower, Orchestra Hall, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and the Art Institute of Chicago are among other well-known sights and institutions located only minutes from UIC. The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) allows easy access to all corners of the city and provides the opportunity to truly explore and enjoy Chicago.
With the resources of Chicago at UIC’s doorstep, students and scholars enjoy exceptional opportunities to experience the energy of the city’s neighborhoods and range of cultural, intellectual, and recreational activities that few other universities can match.
